Seattle and barbeque have a tumultuous love affair. The sort of relationship that is at times on and off again, one never sure which, and yet continuously returning back into each others arms for a dirty little nibble followed by a nasty fallout in which neither calls the other until they can’t remember why.

The Snout & Co. food truck is popular, but service is efficient and friendly.

These were my thoughts while waiting next to the warm exhaust pipe of Snout & Co’s foodtruck parked at Westlake this afternoon. The rain had let up for just long enough to enjoy a brisk walk and some cool sunshine. I found myself wandering towards the music I could hear wafting around city blocks; something not quite identifiable. Bluesy, or perhaps even rockabilly. My musical wanderings led me to the equally curious black truck with the snout painted on the side. I figured I was in for pork. I was right.

The Cuban food truck’s menu is brief and to the point, much like the service here. Although the line was getting long with the arrival of two firetruck crew’s, the staff whipped us through with efficiency and enough time to jot down our names on our tickets. Two variations of a Cuban (though neither included egg, which saddens my heart), several bowl style rice-and-beans options, and a Classic BBQ Sandwich. The side of plantains with smoked tomatillo-coconut sauce was tempting, but I was here for the goods. I went with the BBQ Pork Sandwich (South Carolina style) smothered in the Ancho-Ginger sauce.

The South Carolina Style BBQ Sandwich is sweet, tangy, and incredibly moist.

Much like the high stakes love affair, I will never know where my impulsive choice may have taken me otherwise… but for now it lead to sweet, spicy, succulent heaven. The bun seems to be generic, but its soft texture soaks up all that juicy sauce and couches gently layers of moist, tangy pulled pork. Generous slivers of red cabbage add just a little bit of a bitter crunch to each delicious bite, and before you know it that perfect sandwich is gone – devoured in those passionate, messy, stolen moments together.

Maybe this time will be different. Maybe this time, he’ll call.

With St. Patty’s Day just around the corner, what better way to celebrate than with Honest Biscuit‘s latest flavor, “The Kilt”? This savory pillow of finger-licking warmth is made with nuggets of Market House corned beef, Mt. Townsend’s “Off Kilter” toma cheese, organic green onions, and a pinch of horseradish. The cheese is washed in Pike Brewing Company’s Kilt Lifter ale, and just a bit of that goes into the dough as well.

"The Kilt" is crunchy with a light, buttery inside and creamy cheese flavor. Salty corned beef chunks punctuate the texture, but where's the horseradish?

I was pleasantly surprised with the light, airy texture of the dough. The slightly crunchy outside had me blissfully popping each buttery mouthful. I especially enjoyed the bites with a good, salty nugget of corned beef – but found myself wishing there was just a little bit more meat/dough ratio. I especially felt that I would have liked to taste a lot more of the horseradish, which sadly got lost completely in the overwhelming cheese flavor. Although Mt. Townsend’s cheese is creamy and pleasing, I felt a bit like I was primarily eating a cheese biscuit by the time I was licking my fingers.

I give it an overwhelming “delicious!” but would implore for a bit more of a horseradish kick to take “The Kilt” to the next level.

Honest Biscuits currently runs a food stand at the West Seattle Farmer’s Market on Sundays from 10-2PM. You can also check them out on Facebook.

It was a a bitter cold March morning when I managed to bundle up and stumble towards the West Seattle Farmer’s Market. The clouds were drizzling us with the sort of rain that any pure blooded Seattlite wouldn’t even notice. The wind, however, was less forgiving. As I paid for my cardamom & coconut pastry from Tall Grass Bakery, we mumbled our thank you’s to each other through chattering teeth.

In better weather, just a short walk away was the real source of my morning visit. A friend’s e-mail earlier in the week had dug up an unknown gem we had yet to discover in the deliciously packed West Seattle borough. A few clicks through Yelp! reviews had me replying with far too many exclamation marks that Sunday would mark our pilgrimage to Highstrike Grill. The restaurant is located on the top floor of the West Seattle Bowl and looks like it’ll soon be tucked just behind Trader Joe’s – which is sure to become a West Seattle landmark in the next month. For now, parking is ample.

Modern Interiors give it an updated feel

When we walked inside, I was immediately surprised by how clean and modern the dining space felt. I’d expected sticky vinyl seats and a bowling alley dive. Instead the ceilings were clean, the booths were ample, and the lighting looked more like an IKEA display than a diner. A flat screen TV above the wait station was broadcasting 80s music videos that had me humming along with pre-caffinated nostalgia.

The coffee is surprisingly smooth & delicious

We were greeted by a cheerful teenager with a smattering of tattoos and manic panic hair. She poured me a cup of coffee that I later learned had some fancy Italian brand name, but all that mattered to me was that it was absolutely delicious with just a small pour of milk. I poured over the menu with such delight that I had to use the “pick a number” method to decide just what to order. In the end, we decided to split the Seven-Ten Scramble and the Bacon Waffle – which yes, does in fact have the bacon warmly ensconced inside its sweet, doughy depths.

The Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary Bar ($9) is a pleasantly surprising find

While waiting for our food to arrive, we headed downstairs to the bowling alley and bar. Our hipster lumberjack bartender offered bacon salt for the rim on the Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary bar ($9). While this originally struck me as hokey, there is actually a fairly robust offering of choices that would leave any Bloody Mary fan smiling with their Frankenstein creation.

There are no long Downtown brunch hotspot waits here. In fact the waitstaff was all perfectly attentive and friendly, and our plates arrived before we could finish reminiscing about how great it was rollerskating to Peter Cetera’s “Glory of Love.”

The Bacon Waffle loses the bacon flavor.

The Bacon Waffle was a about the size of a plate and a great size for just $7. Warm and chewy on the inside, nicely crispy on the outside, and the batter isn’t overly sugary. I had hoped that the bacon would permeate the flavor more. Unfortunately, the bacon actually gets rather lost and while the idea is novel – if it’s bacon you’re craving, I’d skip it and get something with your rashers on the side.

The Seven-Ten Scramble: Not really a scramble, but the ingredients are fresh and delicious

The Seven-Ten Scramble was less of a scramble and more of a plate of scrambled eggs with other yummy things atop it. The avocado slices were fresh and deliciously creamy. The rasher of bacon gave me the bacon fix I’d been wanting and was crisped just right. The potatoes o’brien were to die for. The fries here are homemade and I couldn’t help but wonder if these are too? They were golden fried lightly and didn’t sit heavy at all.

The ingredients here are all surprisingly fresh and cooked expertly. There’s no impulse to blot your plate with a paper napkin that usually accompanies a bowling alley meal. The prices are easy on the wallet, the waitstaff are friendly and adorably Seattle funky, and the dining area is clean and modern. Yet, I left feeling like nothing had really wowed me. I’m tucking this away as an okay brunch spot, but perhaps I’ll have to come back for dinner. Those hamburger’s looked pretty amazing.
